this was a 'first'...as the archdeacon who brokered the compensation package also read an of 'acknowledgement' at service in which he said not enough was being done for women sexually assaulted by clergy as ADULTS. wow! from the pulpit his very words... please post service details on your webs /links/twitter/facebook etc. i want it to go viral!

MACSAS - Minister & Clergy Sexual Abuse Survivors UK leave Catholic Church Talks

After a year of discussion myself and Anne Lawrence left the 'exploratory talks' set up by the Catholic Church in England and Wales's safeguarding committees yesterday.

As the only Clergy sexual abuse survivors group there, (there were other survivors groups) we came to understand the Catholic Church was preparing to design 'pastoral care guidelines' for ALL victims of abuse, physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect, of ALL people in parishes, abused by ANYONE.

Whilst we agree this is a great idea, the Church's sole purpose of doing this was to 'bury' clergy sex abuse victims and NOT offer SPECIFICALLY , primarily services for them other than whats available for all parishioners.

This we felt was devious, rejecting, denial of the Church's duty to be accountable, recognise the harm done by their clergy and offer justice and reparation.

The other focus the Church wanted was to 'reconcile victims to the Catholic Church', this we felt quite outrageous.

Survivor groups around the table were to form a group of 'critical friends' of the Catholic Church.

These themes really told us over the year that the Catholic Church were either completely aware of their stratedgy to 'bury' clergy sexual abuse issues/victims or still 'did not get it'.

We believe it's the former and so could not stay.

The Latern Project also walked out.
Please see www.macsas.org.uk for press releases and comentary.

please advise all your contacts on our decision.

Dublin Catholics could face church levy as Archdiocese faces ‘financial collapse’

Dublin Catholics could face church levy as Archdiocese faces ‘financial collapse’

i hate the way they say 'because of victim payouts', as if this has been the biggest factor. the church has lost a whole army of catholics due to their blatant , criminal behaviour in protecting clergy sex offenders...so no pennies in the plate. they are paying the price of complete arrogance and 'the church' must now be lay people practicing the gospel principles and lessons without this huge tier of hypocrisy.

meeting an archbishop

the formal bit was largely being in a room looking like a palace ane surveying beautiful things that must have cost a fortune. believe me there was no formallity in voice, address or contents of two survivors of clergy sexual abuse trying to get justice. he is not the cause of the origional injustice but has perpetrated another one in simple non-response or response so futile as to leave the one concerned victim sick to death of travelling to his house for cups of very nice coffee. her sister also a victim watches as the victim cries, shouts and thumps her wheelchair arms in rage and total articulation of the whole debackle called 'response'. ten years with the diocese and 8 years with him. nothing she said was unmerrited, everything she said was true, in that meeting of despair we looked at an archbishop filled with such incomprehension and face raw with utter bewilderment it was hard not to feel a little bit sorry for him. but when he asks what justice means for us you'd wonder whether he ever read the letters from the victim in all those 8 years. and when he asked us/her to write down our questions for the religious order and what we wanted by way of 'justice' we knew he hadn't because as i grabbed the file off the victim i dredged up a letter written to him in 2006 saying all these things.

i asked in no uncertain terms whether he would simple take a dumper truck through the walls of the religious order and obtain the truth. a reference to a man who did this through the Dail gates litterly!

but the order are in america, but i have no jurisdiction over the order, but they say we would have to go to court for any satisfaction. limp, limp, limp responses for an archbishop who has confronted all his own bishops for untruth, lack of transpairency and even publically washed his hands of fellow bishops. is he the archbishop of duplicity? or is he the archbishop of courage? hard know to know.

does he love and hurt only for the picked few?

after two hours , exhausted, crying, and totally bewildered by the archbishop's weakness and also care, for i suspect he does care, we ironically get into a plush taxi, merc, hailed off the road by archbishop's uriah heap, secretary, named monsignour but put the phone down on me last week, whose driver said "my wife's dad, now dead, was the cousin of the archbishop". are we in ireland so emmeshed by birth, by family, by culture we simply know too much and therefore hide too much. just as my sister-in-law's uncle was pushed from his diocese for inaction that led to a death of a survivor.

i have arrived in a beautiful country, but also a very unbeautiful country. the contradictions prolific. irish people outraged yet irish people unstired to action, only the survivors. only the survivors can hold both beauty and rage and action.

but we are silenced by the culture of a land too long obedient to pope, archbishops, bishops and priests.

as we lie exhausted today these victims still cry and await justice. but until everyone knows what justice means there will be no justice.

pondering....compensation

having just been given £30,000 compensation by the anglican church in the UK following sexual abuse by one of their clergymen 30years ago as a young adult, I'm left pondering what the purpose of it is? I wanted Justice and although i had confronted my Abuser (Now in Florida)about ten years ago and discovered at least three women were also abused the church had never much helped me up until now. I eventually got him out of ministry.

So am i happy about this 'compensation'?'compensation' is not the word to use, more like proof of acknowledgement. thats all.

It's dofficult to say much about my very ambivalent feelings?. At first I was, I felt relief that the Anglican Church appeared to recognise my trauma without too much hassle. But when the caveat was made "if you want more we'll have get all your medical files and have you assessed ", I felt "you want to 'strip' me again?!

I was not prepared for that, I felt it was blackmail. Designed to frighten me and cause me to stop asking. I still feel that the process validated what I'd gone through but does'nt amount to 'repairing the damage'.

so was it worth it? yes, if only to continue to raise awareness of adult women being sexually exploited. to confront the hiararchies, leadership, to support other victims, and to reclaim your integrity.

none of this means i am 'happy' about this token payment as it does'nt nearly reflect either the trauma or costs of my therapy fees over the years.

but i do feel vindicated and of course it says "we believe you" which is actually the thing that is so useful to have.

I'm not out to crucify the Anglican Church but to threaten that a medical examination (psychiatry!!) would ensue if I asked for more or to ask us to submit to more intrusion in our lives is unjust.it hardly speaks of care.

what do people think? what do you think churches should do for victims?
