Rome conference on clergy sexual abuse

its difficult to respond to ths 4 day symposium with any degree of enthusiasm. for a start i don't like the idea that the catholic church feels it now has a mission to 'heal' victims! for many the profound damage of clergy sexual abuse is life-long, the secondary damage through the often vicious responses by non-abusing clergy, bishops and church leaders towards victims has been horriendous. for the church to now say they want to 'heal' us is really quite distasteful.

apologies and requests we 'forgive' the church are too soon. even now over 30 years after public exposition of the horrors of abuse , we are not ready to forgive. why? because despite the church saying they want to 'hear' survivors, heal victims, there are large numbers of bishops not willing to engage in any child protection policies that they see contrary to canon law or the sanctity of 'vocation' and 'priesthood'.

over 100 bishops attending does not constitute the full membership of the bishop ranks. the conference, behind closed doors, consists of largely elderly, entrenched, encultured, and clericalist mind-set bishops and cardinals. Archbishop Brady of Ireland comes to mind.

should survivors ever trust this leadership? not when Lavada, at this so-called 'groundbreaking' conference says the present Pope has been vilified by the press when there should be gratitude...for what?

Lavada who still won't tell bishops to report in mandatory fashion clergy sex offenders to statutory authorities, but instead uses the lighter word and meaning 'co-operate' with authorities. essentially this can mean, don't do anything active but if the authorities come knocking on your door, co-operate. nothing new there.

Lavada blames the media for negative reporting when we should all be praising Pope Benedict with gratitude. how come soooooooooo many are not 'grateful' to Benedict? well clearly they are NOT hearing victims, victim groups . you see 'hearing' is a profound understanding of the issues, and they still don't get it. listen they might, hearing they don't.

Fr Zollner disengeniously remarks he can't find victims ' able and willing' to speak publically of their pain and suffering. but they have 'found' Marie Collins in Ireland. conveniently NOT associated with any perceived 'radical' or 'political' survivor group such as '1 in 4' or MACSAS (UK) or SNAP(USA) or survivors Australia. these groups are persona non gratia with the vatican. why? because we have vociferously challanged, protested, criticised and loudly denounced the evil machinary of Rome. and it is evil. there is no lack of victims willing to speak publically.

Zollner really means he can't find a victim who will 'behave' as THEY (the vatican) would wish in Rome.

I'm certainly not saying Marie Collins is a 'soft touch' . she is not. i respect her hugely and she only wants protection of children, period. and has been an admirable champion of that cause.

but lets not be nieve , Rome refuses to speak to survivor groups, local bishops are completely antagonistic to survivor groups and those not in full 'co-operation' with the church and who are unwilling to bend to the manipulation and control by the church are not heard or wanted.

the fact established survivor groups were not wanted/invited to Rome speaks volumes.

it is time Rome realised they are our abusers, not our healers. healing us is not their remit. many of these so-called 'healers' ought to be in jail.

so i can't enthuse about the conference in Rome. it's all abit like abusers trying to set up therapy groups for victims.

it truly sticks in my gullet.
